Weekend Wrap-Up: Bring on Turkey Day and the Cold Front

Another exciting weekend in college sports (5-3 with my picks for the week). The BCS picture in college football was once again shaken up, a couple top college hoops teams went down and two Florida offensive lineman made sweet love on the field...pretty much sums of the year for the Gators who lost to FCS Georgia Southern on Saturday 26-20. Oh yea, and Georgia Southern didn't complete a pass in that game! Here are some stories from the weekend and things to look forward to on campus this week:

College Football:

- The Cinderella story of Baylor football has come to an end. Baylor was dominated by host Oklahoma State 49-17. I had a feeling Oklahoma State was going to win, but Baylor didn't even put up much of a fight which was surprising. Two videos pretty much sum up the game...

...not quite a Heisman moment for Bryce Petty, Baylor fumbled on the next play...

Congrats Coach Gundy, whose famous press conference rants never gets old. He's a man! He's 40!

- Don't worry Oregon, you won't have to play in the Rose Bowl anymore, which was so far below your standards apparently. You lost to Arizona 42-16 on Saturday, so you're probably headed for the Alamo Bowl. How do you feel about a non-BCS bowl, fellas? Too cocky for my liking, enjoy San Antonio.

- Very excited for Arizona State, who has a chance at a Rose Bowl bid in a few weeks against Stanford. somewhere out West, Jack is drinkin' Natty's. Enjoy it buddy, I'm pullin' for them.

- Minnesota might have lost to Wisconsin in Saturday's battle for Paul Bunyon's Axe but they didn't go down without a fight. In an attempt to chop down the goalpost at Minnesota's field, Wisconsin players were greeted by drunk fans and angry players (at least I don't think the players were drunk) who didn't allow the Badger to complete their tradition. Good news: no one was axed.

- Myself and Ryan Klimek's Heisman darkhorse, Derek Carr, still makin' plays. Fresno State to the BCS.

College Basketball:

- I have to say there seems to be a lot of parity in college hoops this season, which is already getting me way too excited for March. Here are some other headlines from the week in college hoops...

- After a tumultuous off-season and start to this current season, North Carolina finally has reason to celebrate. The #24 Tar Heels knocked off #3 Louisville 93-84 in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament. Marcus Paige, who looks like one of the most improved players in the country this season, scored 32 for the Tar Heels. The defending champion Cardinals looked pretty bad: Russ Smith and Chris Jones 56 points, everyone else? 28. That won't work.

- A few other top teams struggled. Michigan lost their second game of the year and is really struggling without Trey Burke at point. Nik Stauskas is a having a great year thus far scoring the ball, but Glenn Robinson III hasn't done much and Mitch McGary has looked more like a football player than a basketball player from what I've watched.

- #6 Duke got all they could handle from Vermont winning 91-90 at Cameron Indoor to keep their non-conference home winning streak alive, which dates back to 2000. I was rallying behind Vermont, who is led by seniors Brian Voelkel and Sandro Carissimo. I grew up playing against these two guys in CYO and High School, and I'm probably a combined 0-25 against them between the ages of 10-18. Vermont should be a factor out of the America East come March.

- Georgetown beat #10 VCU 84-80 over the weekend. Without even going into details about the game or statistics I just want to share that there were 61 fouls called. 61! These games are tough to watch. Just reiterating my prior point from a few weeks back, just too too many fouls being called.
